Amod Prasad Upadhyay (born March 29th, 1936) is a Nepalese social worker and politician.[1] He currently represents the Morang-1 constituency in the Constituent Assembly of Nepal. He is a member of the Nepali Congress party.

Early Life

Upadhyay was born in Biratnagar to Janak Prasad Upadhyay and Chandrakumari Upadhyay.[1]. He was a student at Adarsha Vidyala in Biratnagar. He completed his higher secondary education, known as IA at that time, from Benaras, India and then enrolled at Benaras Hindu University where he obtained a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science.

Political Career

Upadhyay joined politics in 1956 as a Nepali Congress activist and was later imprisoned by the autocratic Panchayat regime for his pro-democracy political activities. He was a member of Rashtriya Sabha from 1991 to 1995. He contested and won the 1999 by-elections in Morang-1 and has represented that constituency in the Pratinidhi Sabha and Constituent Assembly since. Upadhyay also served as Nepal's Minister for Education and Sports from 2001 to 2002 in the cabinets of Sher Bahadur Deuba and Girija Prasad Koirala.[2]. He was imprisoned again during the regime of former king Gyanendra Shah in 2005[3] Following the 2006 democracy movement and the reinstatement of the Pratinidhi Sabha, Upadhyay served as the Chief Whip of the Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party in the reinstated house and the interim-parliament.He was elected to the party's Central Working Committee (CWC) from Koshi Zone at the party's general convention in 2010.[4]
